Short Videos Made On My Own Time
A film by Cecilia Brown and Winslow Crane-Murdoch, featuring Anna Marra.
Music: "Rides Through the Morning" by Michael Nau
At the beginning of quarantine, when the streets of Portland were still empty, we made this short dance film. At the time, the world and future felt dark and unknown, but the making of it lifted our spirits. It’s wild to think how much and how little has changed months later. But it still stands as a reminder to keep on dancing, even through the toughest of times.
A special thank you to Michael Nau for making the music that inspired this piece.
I filmed this on the last night of a 45-day trip across the country. My girlfriend and I had driven west, she had plans to ride her bike from Olympic National Park to San Francisco and I figured I could help her get there. I had dropped her off in Port Angeles to start her ride, but I had one more night before my flight back east. I decided to drive down the coast and hike out to this spot on the beach. I’ve always loved traveling alone but this night was a little different. It was the end of a pretty big and amazing trip, and I didn’t want to think about coming home. A reality for me which meant moving back in with my folks to get IV therapy for Lyme disease. I wanted to be present and at peace with being on my own, and yet the beauty and the remoteness of the beach just reinforced how alone I felt. I felt myself being pulled in many directions, and I wanted to somehow capture that. Filming was a needed distraction, one that helped me find the calm I was looking for. This is the result.
